Work In Progress - Saltwater

Last week I posted about a "mermaid" quilt I'm making from 5" Charm Packs from Riley Blake's Saltwater collection.

After enduring neck and wrist pain from squaring up Half Square Triangle Blocks (I need a rotating mat) I was finally was able to play with the blocks to see what kind of layout I want to do.

I tried a few layouts - but since I only used 2 charm packs I decided I'd just keep it scrappy.

When I first started this quilt I was thinking about making it for my niece.  I decided to go in a different direction with her quilt so I decided to donate this quilt to a charity.  As I was quilting it last night I am happy I made the decision to donate this quilt.  I'm hoping a little girl will have a fun time looking closely at this quilt to find the cute little mermaids, fish, and narwhals.

I contacted one non-profit organization that accepts quilts but haven't heard back from them yet.  I'll be looking into more soon incase I don't hear back from them.

Question:
What organization do you like to donate your quilts to?

  2. This quilt will be loved I'm sure. I know my girls would have loved it during their mermaid phases, 15 or so years ago. I donate my quilts to whatever cause is being publicised at the time, e.g. Cyclone in Vanuatu, floods in Whanganui. A shout goes out, and we quilters rummage in our closets for unclaimed quilts. I admire those women who quilt non-stop for charity, but my output is too low for that.

    1. Hi Tawa,
Thank you for visiting my blog and the nice comment. Thank you for your input about charities. Some quilters churn out quilts super fast - my output isn't very high either. I think donating a quilt here and there is great.

  3. Hi Deanna. Your mermaid quilt is bonny and will definitely make a lass very happy. Quilting can be hazardous to your health. I wrote a post about just that. There are links to stretches and exercises in it too. Break and stretch often.Last year I purchased a 12 x12 rotating mat w/coupon...I use it all the time. Totally worth it. I also purchased the bloc-loc square up ruler for HSTs and it works like a charm.l! You don't even need a rotating mat for it!

    1. Hi Zenia,
Thank you for your comment. I will have to check out your post about stretches and exercises for quilters! That sounds like it is just what I need! Thanks for the information about the bloc-loc and mat. They're on my "to purchase" list :D
